Orthokine therapy heralds the new generation of biological treatment options available to manage joint disease.
Orthokine therapy acts both to reduce the inflammation within the joint and allow regeneration response in the cartilage cells.
Orthokine is a new system that has been developed to stimulate white blood cells to produce anti-inflammatory proteins, which reduce the inflammatory phase of joint disease.
These properties are particularly relevant in mild to moderate Osteoarthritis and inflammatory joint disease such as frozen shoulder or tendinitis.
Blood is taken from the patient and incubated for 24 hours in a proprietary syringe that contains glass beads. These Glass beads induce white blood cells to produce and secrete therapeutic proteins during the incubation period.
After 24 hours the blood is separated and concentrated, which leaves a protein rich serum. The serum is split into 3ml doses ready for injection into to diseased joint. Typically each collection produces enough serum for between 6-7 injections. It is important to note that the injections are only suitable to treat the person from which the original blood was collected.
The finished product contains proteins which block the inflammatory substances which are responsible for the substances that cause pain and destruction of the osteoarthritis and otherwise inflamed joints.
WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT INVOLVE?
The therapy consist of a series of joint injections at 7-10 day intervals. Most positive effects are seen after the second and third treatment. Each sample can be frozen to allow later use.
WHAT CASES WARRANT THE USE OF ORTHOKINE?
It is indicated wherever one would have previously used steroid injection. At last, a viable biological (from body tissue) alternative to steroid injections, without the side effects!
The cases that have been demonstrated to respond best are mild to moderate degenerative joint disease.
Orthokine treatment is also warranted after arthroscopic or open joint surgery. In these cases the anti-inflammatory proteins will reduce inflammation within the joint and encourage a regeneration response within damaged cartilage, thus enhancing the outcome of surgery.
WHY USE ORTHOKINE?
This product is 100% body own (biological), stimulating the body's white blood cells to produce a potent mix of anti-inflammatory proteins. Orthokine is different from other products, as it treats the cause of the joint disease, and is aimed at restoring the articular (joint) cartilage function.
Clinical studies performed in Germany demonstrate improved patient, outcomes in pain and mobility, and were similar in effect to cortisone injections after 6 weeks, but were far superior to cortisone after 2 years; more than 75% of patients were still more than 50% improved 2 years after their course of treatment, whereas the cortisone group had not retained any improvement.
WHY USE ORTHOKINE WITH PROLOTHERAPY?
Orthokine directly addresses inflammation of the joint capsule and degeneration of the joint cartilage, whereas prolotherapy addresses the laxity of ligaments and tendon damage associated with joint disease and trauma. Thus, orthokine can be used alongside prolotherapy to provide a more comprehensive approach to joint rejuvenation.
